Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson 1930s Large Stool / Occasional Table

Circa Early 1930s
An excellent example of a rare, large and early made oak Three Legged Cow Stool or Occasional Table from the KIliburn workshops of Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson. Features a large kidney / palette shaped 2" thick single piece top, specifically selected for its rare and characterful finely feathered burr graining. It's adzed to both sides in line with the very earliest craftsmanship, prioir to Robert Thompson's purchase of a planing machine in the later 1930s. The top is relatively flat and not dished like the later made and smaller cow / calf stools, making it ideal for use as an occasional or side / lamp table. Supported on three strong and sturdy octagonally carved and fully adzed splayed legs, wedge jointed through the top with a lovely typical early mouse carving to one leg.
Excellent condition and deep aged colour, the top with expected minor age related wood splits (not deep into the 2" thick top) with a small shallow area of surface scratching loss on the edge of the top which is shown clearly in many of the images in the gallery below. It's also shown next to a 1970s made 18" cow stool so that clients can see the size and scale of the piece, which we are advised originates from an estate in Ripon, North Yorkshire.

Item: 19th Century Painted Pine Blanket Chest.

Description: Gorgeous and extremely decorative antique pine bedding chest. In rare condition, retaining it's polychrome paint and dated 1870. The two-panel top is hinged to the rear and reveals a good sized interior complete with candle box. The sides retain original iron handles and the chest sits on a nicely moulded plinth. Very hard to find this type of chest. They make perfect coffee tables or, as originally intended, placed at the foot of a bed. Truly superb patina that was hard to capture in my photo's. All solid pine throughout and a good, heavy weight, quality example. One for the connoisseur. Absolute bargain start price!

Measurements: Width 1250mm (49 1/4"). Depth 620mm (24 1/2"). Height 515mm (20 1/4").

Condition Report: In good, solid condition throughout. Old paint faded, worn and mellowed with age.

Item: Superb Victorian Book-Form Carved Stationary Box.

Description: An extremely unusual and particularly fine example in solid rosewood and dating to c1890. The box is crafted to resemble a large book. The 'spine' with gentle curve is hinged, opening a full 180 degrees to reveal the interior. The front edge is reed carved to look like the 'pages'. Lovely grain, colour and patina, and super quality throughout. Would take A4, making this ideal for files, stationary, envelopes and letter writing items. Never seen one like it.

Measurements: Width 320mm. Depth 105mm. Height 450mm.

Condition Report: Superb throughout with only minor chips/ scuffs. Lock present but no key.

Item: Large Chinese Zitan Wood Stand.

Description: Very large and heavy (1.3kg!) Chinese stand for a vase or perhaps a censer. Date-wise this is late Ming or Early Qing, somewhere between c1630 and 1730. The zitan (紫檀) is of the red sandalwood variety (Pterocarpus santalinus) which was extremely popular in China, particularly from the 18th century onward, and was highly prized. The stand is carved from a single piece, containing some burl which gives it an unusual grain. The patina is a very deep reddish-brown. A rare example.

Measurements: Diameter 255mm (10"). Accommodating a vase with 193mm base max.

Condition Report: Good condition. There is a small loss to edge rim, and the small pad feet probably added in the 19thC to level the stand which has a slight undulation.
